William Saroyan was an author and playwright born in Fresno. He is known for his classic the "Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze" and my favorite "The Human Comedy" among numerous other novels, short stories, and plays. He was also awarded a Pulitzer Prize for "The Time of Your Life" which he refused to accept in protest of the way the award was determined.
Much of Saroyan's work is based on his life in Fresno. Old Armenian Town in Fresno has an annual Saroyan Festival and there is signage located at various spots where one can visit a glimpse of his past as a youngster. Unfortunately there is not much left from the time he lived. Saroyan Theatre at the Fresno Convention Center is named in his honor as are several other locations in town. (My kids attended Saroyan Elementary School)
The grave in Fresno contains only a portion of Saroyans remains the rest are located in Yerevan, Armenia.
Description: Ararat Cemetery is located amongst several older cemeteries in Fresno, California. The cemetery is primarily used by members of the local Armenian Community. Saroyan's daughter Lucy is buried next to him.
