Marker Text: The Lane County Clerks Building is the oldest authenticated building, private or public in Lane County. Furthermore, it is one of the oldest public buildings still standing in the State of Oregon.

It was built in the classic revival style by Prior Blair in 1853. It was originally built in “fronting on the public square…, the size to be 16x20, one story high.” It was located on the northeast corner of Willamette and 10th on land donated by Eugene Skinner. The construction cost was $100.00.

The first jury trial ever held in the District Court of Lane County took place in the clerk’s building in October, 1853.

After completion of the first Lane County Courthouse in 1855, the clerk’s building was moved several times over the years and finally given to the Lane County Historical Museum on June 27, 1964. It was entered in the National Register of Historic Places on November 25, 1983.
