My description:
Four tall iron triangle wedges overlapping.

Official Remarks (refer to Siris link below):
"The sculpture was based on a design titled Object in Five Planes, an outdoor stabile Calder gave to the United Nations in 1966 and retitled Peace. The 1964 maquette was adapted for the Smithsonian site. An intermediate maquette was created in 1968, from which the final work was enlarged. The sculpture is named after Gwendolyn Cafritz, of the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, who sponsored the project. Calder originally proposed that the sculpture be part of a larger fountain setting. It was placed instead in a static pool near the mall site of the National Museum of American History and dedicated on June 2, 1969. The sculpture was moved from that setting in 1984, as part of Lady Bird Johnson's beautification program and was placed at the side of the museum on Fourteenth Street, among a grove of trees."
