The nearby Shap Abbey with its 13 canons would have been amongst the many users of this bridge. Originally built 50 meters upstream and without any parapet to foul the loads on the horses. The stone could have come from the quarry only a few hundred meters away. But there is evidence that stone was robbed from the ruined abbey when the bridge was rebuilt. The deck is stone with a layer of modern concrete to bind the surface together.
Abbey bridge is now high above the nascent river Lowther, standing 4 meters above the river bed, with a span of 8 meters between river banks.
