A post office was established at Jet on June 28, 1894. The town was named for W. M. Jett, a miller and its first Postmaster.

Eight miles north of Jet on highway 38 is the Great Salt Plains State Park. This is a 840 acre park, with an 8890 acre Great Salt Plains Reservoir and Salt Flats. It is the only spot in the world where a person is allowed to dig for "hourglass selenite" crystals.

The Park has 3 camping areas, a wildlife refuge, swimming, hunting, fishing, boating and water skiing facilities.
