The sculpture memorializes the British attack of 1346-1347, which ended when the town of Calais surrendered, and the British agreed to not seek retribution if six prominent townspeople, the burghers, would accept imprisonment. The six figures are seen standing in long tattered drapery, one with his head in his hands, and the others staring off into the distance.
