The plaque, in part, reads:
After seeing a draft horse competition in a local rodeo, Carlson set out on a one-year task to study these magnificent animals which had "qualities... I couldn't dismiss ... gentleness, loyalty, strength, oneness. The title suggests... the team pulling as one, which could transcend into other relationships, including human ones."
I usually do not like this style of sculpting; a rather rough and bulky use of the clay, but it fits perfectly with this subject. Draft horses were bred to carry the weight of heavily armored knights. Later, the invention of the horse collar improved a horses efficiency so the horse could earn their keep pulling plows and wagons. Prior to the horse collar, a horse was only for the wealthy. I have seen many draft horse pull competition and when one sees these magnificent animals, you understand why we still measure power in 'horsepower.!
