General Philip Schuyler built a small fleet of ships here in 1776. Used by Benedict Arnold in the Battle of Valcour Island, some were subsequently destroyed where they had been launched.

Whitehall Harbor

With the British in pursuit, three vessels of B. Arnold's Lake Champlain fleet were blown up in this harbor by American forces July 6, 1777 to avoid being captured.

The event led to Whitehall's modern-day claim to be the birthplace of the United States Navy. The marker is near the entrance to Champlain Canal Lock #12.
