First, you begin your automotive ascent on NY Highway 431 at the northern base of Whiteface Mountain. You climb 2300 feet to here over a several mile stretch of winding paved highway with many scenic overlooks. There is parking heading back down after this turnaround at "The Castle". From here you can climb/scramble up a trail over boulders (it has a handrail) and steps the remaining 257 feet to the summit or you can backtrack to an elevator that goes up indie the mountain (it is 276 feet, but remember you will go downhill a bit to the entrance).
