The statue on this fountain is Johann Rudolf Wettstein (1594 - 1666), a statesman and mayor of Basel. The fountain was originally planned for the 500th anniversary of the fusion of Basel in 1892 (the parts North and South of the river were under different ownership until 1392), but the fundraising campaign was so extremely unsuccesful that it took several decades until the fountain could be erected in 1955. It was created by artist Alexander Zschokke.
