Virgil "Verge" W. (Walter) Earp (1843-1905), the older brother of notorious Old West lawman Wyatt Earp, is buried beneath a holly tree in River View Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. Of all the people that are buried here he is the most asked about--a gunfighter. His first wife, Ellen, was told that her husband, a Union soldier, had been killed in the Civil War, so she remarried and moved to Portland with their young daughter, Nellie Jane, in 1864. He survived the famous 1881 gunfight in Tombstone, Arizona without a scratch. The family was reunited when he visited Portland in 1899. He died of pneumonia six years later in Goldfield, Nevada and was returned to Portland for burial by his daughter.
His tombstone reads: "In loving memory of my husband, Virgil W. Earp 1843-1905. God will take care of me [followed by nine letters and numbers: Co. C 83d Ill]." The grave has become a popular tourist site, particularly following the 1994 Kevin Costner film, "Wyatt Earp".
