On the southern side of the town of Sihanoukville is a major traffic roundabout, and on that roundabout, is a rather impressive statue of two lions, gold in colour. Certainly eyecatching as you drive by.
At night people congregate here, on the roundabout, and hang out, particularly younger people, teenagers, of both genders. They buy food from street vendors, talk a lot, and loiter. Young people!
Now, the reason that the statues are here—it is a custom and practice in Cambodia (and only in Cambodia, as far as I know) to place statues of boy and girl animals in public places. The reason is that these statues act as a public exemplar of umm, affection, between boys and girls—how things are done, as it were. If one were to place oneself at the appropriate locale and look at these two statues one would see that the boy and the girl lions were both ready to be affectionate (no photo in gallery). All I can say is that there is nothing like this in Australia.
