UPDATE: January 2021. Ann's Chicken Fry has closed after nearly 50 years, due to the downturn from Covid-19. All the 1950's decor and displays have been removed. The pink Cadillac was removed by the Billboard Museum Association. It may become part of their neon sign display. We will update as time goes by to see what business opens at this location.
As you drive West on N.W. 39th Street (Route 66) on the west side of Oklahoma City, you can't miss Ann's Chicken Fry, particularly if it's night and all the neon is aglow. This restaurant is located at 4106 N.W. 39th Street on the south side.
In 1948, this Route 66 icon began as a Cities Service gas station. In 1966, the service station closed and the building became the Three Bulls Steak House until it was purchased by Al Burchett and his brother. They named the new business Ann’s after his brother’s wife.
“Neon” is the operative word as you approach Ann's. The entire building is edged in neon, and a pink neon-bordered Cadillac in the front beckons you in. The décor is 1950s with hundreds of pieces of memorabilia, from 45 rpm records to movie posters, and all those things you (or Grandma) remember. Vintage gas pumps decorate the property, and a 1950s Police car sits in front of the entrance.
And that’s just the beginning. Sit down and look through the menu. You’ll find all the usual burgers and sandwiches, but their specialty is Chicken Fried Steak with milk gravy and mashed potatoes. You can’t beat it. They also have daily specials, senior specials and a children’s menu. And don’t forget to try their fried green tomatoes and fried apples.
This will be a step back in time that you won’t forget.
