I just discovered this furnace while geocaching. I've seen several others in the area but never knew this one existed, even though we've hunted near it many times over the years. It's hard to imagine all the hard physical labor needed to move these stones, especially in Venango County's hilly terrain.
Anyway, the furnace isn't in very good shape, with some of it grown over. I'm guessing a lot of the stones were "adopted" for other uses. There are enough of them left to make a cozy little bear den. I walked up on what I believe is it's current resident while searching for the geocache. I ended up spending as much time looking over my shoulder for the bear as I did looking for the cache. Got it in the end though :) I also saw deer and grouse so bring your camera.
There is an old access road between President Road and Hemlock Creek which leads to the furnace. This would be upstream/SE of the furnace. It is overgrown but obvious if you're looking for it. It's probably your easiest way in.
Lots of hunters/hunting nearby so wear some bright orange for safety during hunting seasons. Deer season (rifle) in PA starts the Monday after Thanksgiving and lasts until the 2nd following Saturday. I'd advise against wondering the woods then.
