Established in 1895, this parish church has served the Catholic community in and around Shawnee since before Statehood. Rev. Felix DeGrasse was its first pastor, serving here from 1895-1898.
This is a beautiful, classic, brick church building, with stained glass windows and a tall steeple. It is located on the northwest corner of N. Kickapoo Street and West Benedict Street. In September 2008, the church inaugurated a service conducted in Spanish to serve the increasing Hispanic population in Shawnee.
St. Benedict's maintains a large cemetery west of Shawnee, off Kickapoo Spur. The cemetery is also commonly known as Calvary Cemetery.
