Haverthwaite village is at the end of the old road leading on to the Cartmel peninsular. This route would have been used by carters moving gunpowder, charcoal and minerals to markets in Ulverston. The houses in Haverthwaite are mainly built from slate rubble, suggesting they were built before 1850.

The handle with mechanism and wooden box have gone and the old pictures show they were once there in 1960. The stone basin below the outlet, has now got flowers in and a welcome sign. Piped water could have come very late to this collection of houses, perhaps 1960s. All that remains is the lead box on a pipe. In relief on the lead front, "EB" and "1765".
