O projecto começou a ser desenvolvido no final da década de 1960 pela Bravia - Sociedade Luso-Brasileira de Veículos e Equipamentos, SARL para as Forças Armadas Portuguesas (cf., Motor Clássico nº 22). As Forças Armadas Portuguesas encontravam-se envolvidas na Guerra do Ultramar e necessitavam de um veículo blindado adaptado às operações militares em curso. Os primeiros foram entregues já nos anos de 1970 e, em 1971, um primeiro lote é enviado para a Guiné-Bissau. Segundo consta, para o projecto do Chaimite o Governo Português terá obtido de entidades americanas, os planos do blindado Cadillac Gage Commando, daí a semelhança entre os dois veículos. Os primeiros veículos foram construídos em Belém (Lisboa), passando a produção posteriormente para a nova fábrica da Bravia, em Samora Correia, na região de Porto Alto.
