Between 1926 and 1984 the Aztec lit up this portion of downtown San Antonio. In 1984 the theater was closed and slated for demolition. The efforts of the San Antonio Conservation Society led to the theater being listed on the National Historic Register, renovated, and re-opened as an attraction to the popular Riverwalk. The current neon is much less elaborate (and artistic) than that which originally graced the building, but it is still a colorful site in the evenings.
