One of the classic views of Madeira, shown on many postcards, is the old north coast sea cliff road between São Vincenti and Seixal. Picture a tour bus on a single lane sea cliff road passing under a waterfall. This is the view from this miradouro.

The current reality is different. The old road is closed due to landslides, rockfalls and the opening of the new road, tunneling through the cliffs. The closure is permanent and has been in effect for several years. The viewpoint remains but it is bypasses by most traffic. A guard rail prevents access to the parking lot. “Just keep moving folks, there is nothing to see here” is the message. But the spectacular scenery remains. The old road continues to be inundated by the waterfall, landslides and rock falls. The coast continues to be carved by the sea into spectacular landforms like the natural arch in the island below the viewpoint.
Here we turned off as we came out of the tunnel onto the old road, parked at the viewpoint, walked passed the barricade towards the waterfall, enjoyed the view, returned for tea at the snack bar and even bought some tee shirts at the souvenir shop. This scenic viewpoint is well worth a stop.
