Two allegorical figures (the coordinates are for "Past"; "Future" is at 32 52.684, W 117 12.475) flanking a reflecting pool in the center of which there is an obelisk, in the Alexandria Technological Center (office park) in the University City section of San Diego, California. The surrounding buildings appear to be occupied at present by the Amylin pharmaceutical firm.

"Past" is a seated male figure in stylized/imaginary ancient Egyptian-style garb, holding a pyramid in his proper right hand. "Future" is a seated female figure in costume that could have been inspired by the design of the futuristic 1927 film "Metropolis," also holding a pyramid in her proper right hand.

In front and to the proper left of each base is a plaque giving the name of the figure and of the sculptor, e.g.:

"PAST"
bronze by
A. WASIL

There are several buildings in this office park; the address of the one closest to the "Past" figure is 9360 Towne Centre Drive. The mailing address is in La Jolla, CA, although that is just the post office name; there is no politically separate city of La Jolla; the location is within the San Diego city limits.

PHYSICAL LOCATION:
9360 Towne Centre Drive, San Diego, California, in the Alexandria Technology Center

DIFFERENCES NOTED BETWEEN THE INVENTORY LISTING AND YOUR OBSERVATIONS AND RESEARCH:
The Smithsonian listing does not give the location of the sculpture (just the address of the owner, which I think is also incorrect; see below); the sculpture is physically located at 9360 Towne Centre Drive, San Diego, CA. The owner listed in the Smithsonian listing, Genesia Pharmaceuticals, appears no longer to exist; of the very few references to it I could find on the Internet, the most recent was a news story from 1991. Perhaps the statues are owned by the developer/landlord of the Alexandria Technological Center, but I have not yet been able to find out who that is.

Visit Instructions:
Please give the date of your visit, your impressions of the sculpture, and at least ONE ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH. Add any additional information you may have, particularly any personal observations about the condition of the sculpture.
