The life-size Old Testament figure stands high on a podium at Fawick Park in downtown Sioux Falls. It is a replica of Michaelangelo’s sculpture of David which was created in Florence, Italy in 1504 A.D. The statue was a gift to the city from inventor Thomas Fawick in 1971.
The Biblical David was one of the best known Israelite kings of the Old Testament. He was also known for being a musician and poet who wrote many of the Old Testament Psalms. His bravery in fighting the giant Philistine Goliath is one of the best loved stories in the Bible. Accounts of King David are found in I Samuel, I Kings and I Chronicles. His life has been important to Jewish, Christian and Islamic traditions.
This statue depicts David when he was just a boy. When he learns that Goliath wishes to fight one of the Israelites in a single fight, young David insists that he can strike the giant down because God will give him the strength to win. King Saul agrees to let David face Goliath, and David does prevail by using a simple slingshot and a stone. When the Philistine’s leader lies dead from David’s victory, the enemies flee in terror. David later becomes the King is Israel. This story can be found in I Samuel 17.
