All roads branching off from the city of Rome have names that also name a specific neighborhood in the city where the road begins. "Portuense" means "to the port", and this road, dating back to ancient Rome, connected the city with the sea port.
The memorial is a stone plaque on a concrete wall supporting the railroad tracks that go over the road. At the center of the stone plaque there is a metal decal representing a sword with the word "SPQR".
