The Washita Theater is located at 507-509 W. Chickasha Avenue in downtown Chickasha. [Some listings show the theater as 511 W. Chickasha Ave.].
This beautiful, Moderne style building was built in 1941, designed by architect Jack Corgan. This is a three-story stucco building that replaced the original theater located south of First National Bank, which burned in late 1939.
The focal point of this theater building is the large vertical cylinder that dominates the center of the facade and soars up above the roofline, accentuated with seven red metal bands and neon letters reading "WASHITA" on both sides.
The marquee was built in 1960 and is the full width of the facade. There are two recessed wooden double-door entrances with portholes. The entrances are separated by a round ticket booth.
The movie theater that operated here until April 2001, had a seating capacity of 768. The original balcony area had been remodeled to house a second screen. The theater building was then purchased by the Chickasha Community Theater Group. After extensive remodeling and re-fitting, it re-opened in August 2010 and operates now as a live theater.
