Two sides of this utility box depict a sand-filled hourglass. One of the other sides shows, in the upper part of an hourglass, a woman holding a baby, and in the lower part, the woman's feet standing on a skull. The fourth side shows, in the upper part, a lush forest with a river running through it, and in the lower part, a dry, "Wall-E"-type landscape, with drips of water falling on a single green plant.
The side showing the woman and baby is signed "KIZ". In late 2010 I saw the artist painting it but unfortunately I did not stop and find out any further information from her.
The "hourglass" motif is a play on the name of the adjacent Hourglass Park, which is jointly maintained by the city and the Community College district (Miramar College is just north of here). During and after World War II this area was an emergency landing field for U.S. Navy aircraft from the Miramar military base (the former "Top Gun" flying school) to the south of here.
Hourglass Park now contains a playground and several baseball and soccer fields. Adjacent is a public swimming pool.
Name of Artist: KIZ
Title of the Art: Unknown
Year Decorated: 2010
