As early as 1919, the residents had established a public library in a small adobe building. As the village grew over the years to eventually become a city with a population of over 42,000, the libraries grew as well. There were more than 12 different locations and now the current one has over 155,000 individual items, giving the Palm Springs Public Library the largest collection in the Coachella Valley.
