The Albert Schweitzer Hospital (Dutch: Albert Schweitzerziekenhuis) has four establishments: two in Dordrecht (Dordwijk and Amstelwijck), one in Zwijndrecht and one in Sliedrecht.
1910 - The Vereeniging voor Diaconessenarbeid in Dordrecht en omstreken (Society for Deaconesses Labour in Dordrecht and surroundings) was founded.
1912 - First very small hospital (actually just a dwelling house with a few beds) was opened at the Oudehovenstraat.
1919 - New hospital at the Prinsenstraat.
1923 - The hospital had 23 beds but had to close because of financial problems.
1925 - Sister Cor van Glabbeek started again with taking care of patients at the Prinsenstraat.
1950s - The deaconesses home at the Prinsenstraat had become a hospital with around 175 beds.
1958 - The Refaja Hospital was opened at the Bellevuestraat.
1970 - Again the hospital moved, this time to the current location near the Reeweg Zuid. The square before the hospital was called Van der Steenhovenplein, after the chairwoman who helped the society through the difficult period 1922-1925.
1991 - The Refaja Hospital merged with the Jacobus Hospital in Zwijndrecht. Together they became the Drechtsteden Hospital.
1999 - The Drechtsteden Hospital merged with the Merwede Hospital, which had two establishments: Dordrecht and Sliedrecht. The former Refaja Hospital is now known as Albert Schweitzer Hospital location Amstelwijck, while the other establishment in Dordrecht is called Albert Schweitzer Hospital location Dordwijk.
