The OU College of Health, located at 801 N. E. 13th Street houses the College of Public Health and the College of Allied Health. On the west side of this building, near the entrance is a wooden slatted bench honoring Dr. Everett R. Rhoades.
The plaque reads: "To honor Dr. Everett R. Rhoades. Presented by family, friends and colleagues. August, 2001."
Dr. Rhoades is a Kiowa Indian, and the first American Indian Director of the Indian Health Service, a position he held for eleven years.
He is an Internist and has presided over national health care for the delivery of preventive, curative and community care of 1.5 million American Indians and Alaskan natives.
A graduate of OU Medical School, he was the first member of his tribe to earn a doctorate degree.
His career has spanned fifty-five years, in practice, teaching and administration. His most recent roll was as the Associate Dean for Community Affairs for the College of Public Health, and Director of the Native American Prevention Research Center. Today, after attempting to retire three times, he is currently serving as a lay assistamt to the Indian Health Board, and is on the Board of the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic. He also consults with the Strong Heart Study of Indian health.
