Le Pont De Normandie (The Normandy Bridge), crossing Seine river close to it's estuary to English Channel, is concededly not only important engineering landmark, but also one of the most beautiful European bridges.
Le Pont De Normandie (The Normandy Bridge) is with length 2143 m, width 23.6, height 215 m and the longest span 856 m one of the biggest cable stay bridges on the world. This beautiful bridge was constructed in 1988-1995 and at this time it was the longest in the world. One of the major rationales for constructing a cable stay bridge is that it is more secure in the wind than a suspension bridge and also cheaper. The Normandy Bridge has 184 cable stays which hold the mass of the deck. Aerodynamic performance is improved by a blue painted aluminum cornice along the edge of bridge which also serves to unify the two sections.
Le Pont De Normandie was tested after completion with a weight of trucks equal to 16 000 000 kg. Each of the both huge pylons, holding the cables, is 214 m high.
Le Pont De Normandie is listed in iCivilEngineer database.
