This Iowa historical marker is found on a rock along Hwy. 18 just east of Sheldon. A road sign points to the marker for the driver’s ease of finding it. It is located on the N.E. corner of Hwy. 18 and Olive Avenue.
Historical Record: On May 26, 1861 – four young pioneers from eastern Iowa, traveling in a prairie schooner, located the government survey marker at this corner, from which, with the aid of a compass and a rag tied around their wagon wheel located the unbroken prairie, other section corners, and their following homesteads:
Rolland H. Cook, N.W. ¼ sec. 2 Carroll TWP.
Augustus Herrick, N.E. ¼ sec. 12 Carroll TWP
Chas. A. Toothaker, N.W. ¼ sec. 12 Carroll TWP
James McFarland, N.W. ¼ sec. 32 Carroll TWP
In grateful remembrance is this memorial erected by their sons.
