Large numbers of Basque emigrated to southeast Oregon in the 1890s and early 1900s. Pelota is a traditional handball game played by the Basque. The court used for Peiota is called a Fronton. Many of the Basque were skilled masons and they built this court from stones quarried east of town in 1915. The court is 100 feet long 30 feet wide and 30 feet high. The walls are about 18 inches thick with stone buttresses supporting the outside walls. The court was last used on a regular basis in 1935. The Fronton was placed on the National Register in 1972 and was restored in 1997.
