Founded on the 8th August 1135 by Roger de Clinton, Bishop of Chester.
Roger gave the monks of Savigniac the land the abbey is sited on along with lands near Shrewsbury.
In 1138 King Stephen confirmed these grants with a charter which also included gifts and privileges of his own.
In July 1537 following the suppression of the monasteries by Henry VIII, the abbey with its other holdings in Shropshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire was granted to Sir Edward Grey, Lord Powis.
In 1648 Buildwas came into the ownership of Sir William Acton, then later on in the 17th century Walter Moseley.
The Moseley family owned the abbey until the mid 1920's, when due to concerns about the poor and dangerous state of the buildings, they were placed into the guardianship of HM office of works by, Major H.R. Moseley.
Since 1984 the site has been in the care of English Heritage.
