Harlow is one of the UK's towns built under the New Towns Act of 1946, a measure brought in by a government having to deal with the wartime urban destruction, chiefly of London.

Planners would arrange towns with a recognisable commercial centre, industry separated out and built with good communications, so always convenient for rail, and with satellite housing estates, with smaller local shops, religious centres and of course, their own pub.

It was decided that Harlow pubs would be named after butterflies and moths. This is one where the sign painter has interpreted the sign slightly differently.
