Founded in 1710 by Baron Christopher de Graffenried of Bern, Switzerland, New Bern is located at the confluence of the Trent and the Neuse rivers about forty miles from the Atlantic ocean. For a time New Bern was the largest city in North Carolina serving as the colonial capitol and the first state capitol following the American Revolution until 1794 when Raleigh became the capital.
New Bern fared better than most southern cities during the Civil War after being captured by Union forces in March of 1862. The resulting occupation lasted for the duration of the war, helping to preserve many of the historic structures that remain today. Many of these are listed on the National Register of Historic Places or are located in one of the three historic districts found in New Bern.
The posted coordinates are for the North Carolina History Center at 529 S. Front Street in New Bern.
