Prague Market(Pražská tržnice) in Holesovice has belonged to Prague since 1895. Even before Holešovice village was connected to Prague, it was decided that the central slaughterhouse of the royal city of Prague would be built on the north bank of the river Vltava. The reason for this was to abolish private slaughtering in Prague. Its construction, according to plans of Josef Srdínek, commenced on March 6th, 1893; as early as July 1st, 1895, the slaughterhouse was inaugurated for routine slaughtering and vending.
The slaughter and butcher business ended here in 1983. The originally municipal complex of the central slaughterhouse was transformed into a common marketplace. The complex offers its visitors not only the biggest vegetable market in the city, but one that is exceptional for selling vegetables and fruits throughout the whole year. Many small farmers offer their products in hall 22, which guarantees that enough home-grown natural products from Czech farmers are available here. You can also find flowers, herbs, Christmas trees, honey and fresh eggs in this indoor vegetable market.
