The old but restored and renovated US Post Office in the historic downtown area of Annapolis, MD has a Roman numeral date over its front door that translates to 1901 but it was done using the less common additive dating method. Usually, Roman numerals are diplayed in a shorter, subractive form to indicate 1901 by subtracting 100 from one thousand to get 900 (CM = 900). Therefore you would usually see 1901 expressed as MCMI = 1000+900+1 = 1901). However, when the date was built into the cornice above the main entryway into this Post Office, the additive method was used where the symbols are simply added together to get the total (MDCCCCI = 1000+500+100+100+100+100+1 = 1901). Both derive the same date but the one used here is less frequently encountered and is more cumbersome to write and to translate. The Post Office is across the street (Church Circle) from St. Anne's Church and is adjacent to the State Office Building. The address is officially 3 Church Circle, Annapolic, MD 21409.
