San Francisco is a city with many hilly neighborhoods. There are many hidden stairways that connect hillside neighborhoods.
I discovered the joy Street Stairway from the upper level on Brewster Street, where there's a small street sign saying "End Joy". The posted coordinates are at the top of the stairs. This is a sturdy stairway with concrete underpinnings and wooden steps with a non-slip strip at the edge of each step. The stairway has hand railings on each side and twists it's way down to Holladay Avenue, which parallels nearby Highway 101. For those wiching to locate and start at rge bottom of the stairway, go to N37 44.619 W122 24.387. A nearby bicycle-pedestrian overcrossing will take you over the freeway to Bay Shore Boulevard on the other side.
The stairway descend roughly 70 feet using about 150 steps. There are lush gardens along the way and several homes along the way, accessible only by the stairway.
From the bottom, three block to the north on Holladay is the bottom of the Rutledge Stairway. From the top, two blocks to the north on Brewster is the bottom of the Miller Memorial Stairway and another block further north is the top of the Rutledge Stairway.
