Designed by architect Willis Polk, the 60-foot-high temple was modeled after the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, Italy. Its red roof is supported by 12 Corinthian columns. Polk sought to insure that the scale of the future temple would harmonize with the surrounding environment.

The temple ceiling's wedge-shaped paintings of maidens were created by Yun Gee and a team of other Chinese artists, commissioned at the time by the Spring Valley Water Company. However, the art project was never completed. Some of the figures are still outlines, and a few spaces remain empty.

Excepted from Wikipedia:

For decades the Water Temple received many visitors and was a popular location for picnickers. By the 1980s the water temple had badly deteriorated, and was severely damaged in 1989's Loma Prieta earthquake, leading some community leaders to call for its demolition. The site was closed to the public because of safety concerns. A community effort led to the temple's restoration from 1997 to 2001, at a cost of $1.2 million, including seismic and accessibility upgrades. Following its restoration the temple opened again to the public.
Pictures of this resoration process (used to be available online) showing the wooden slats of the temple dome having been removed and stored at the Oakland Museum.
