Considering this river is not navigable at this point the arches are really high.
However the river is susceptible to flooding and a number of previous bridges were swept away. By building the arches so high this bridge has been able to allow the flood water to flow through even when the river is in full flood.
It did used to take road traffic, but this has now been stopped and is only used for pedestrians and cycles.
It was built in 1675 so those high arches have definitely worked well.
