Kearns is a small formerly agricultural community that has been surrounded by urban sprawl but has not lost that small town feel.

Kearns was established in 1942 to support the nearby Army Air Field which had sprung up in reaction to the start of World War II. For years it was just a small agricultural community out in the sticks. But rampant growth has surrounded it with new residential communities that have merged and incorporated to form new cities. Kearns is one of the townships that has fought growth, mergers, and incorporation. It remains the only unincorporated area in ZIP code 84118, which also includes portions of Taylorsville and West Valley City. Because of all this growth-oriented activity, the Kearns Post Office is now no longer in Kearns itself. It is across the street from Kearns in the city of Taylorsville.
