Sigma Chi was founded over 150 years ago at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio on June 28, 1855. Being a Sigma Chi is an active, earnest process of striving for the ideals of friendship, justice, and learning throughout life. Membership in Sigma Chi is a lifelong commitment both to the ideals and to the brothers of the Fraternity. Because the strength and vitality of Sigma Chi depends upon the quality and depth of this commitment, Sigma Chis must have high expectations of themselves.
Sigma Chi’s use the standard (known as the Jordan Standard) created by one of the fraternities seven founders in evaluating a prospective member. The Jordan Standard : The standard with which the fraternity started was declared by Isaac M. Jordan to be that of admitting no man to membership in Sigma Chi who is not believed to be: A man of good character... A student of fair ability... With ambitious purposes... A congenial disposition... Possessed of good morals... Having a high sense of honor, and a deep sense of personal responsibility.
The University of Utah chapter was the first fraternity on this campus, founded in 1908 and currently has the largest membership on greek row. The original Sigma Chi house still stands at 1395 East 100 South, and after a year 2000 reconstruction has four floors and is home to over 30 brothers. We were able to raise over $20,000 this year at their annual philanthropy week, Derby Days, for the Huntsman Cancer Institute and Primary Children’s Medical Center.
The Sigma Chi Fraternity is known internationally as a premier leadership institution. Locally, philanthropist Jon Huntsman Sr. is a member of the Sigma Chi 150 Significant Sig’s list. His son Utah Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. (also a Significant Sigma Chi), and Salt Lake City mayor Rocky Anderson are members from the University of Utah chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. Other Significant Sigma Chi’s include Business Leaders, Entertainers, Sports Figures, Medical Pioneers, Government Leaders, Military Leaders, and N.A.S.A. Astronauts.
