The family of Joel Howe and his wife and six children were murdered in the Spirit Lake massacre. The plaque reads in full: “Site of Howe Cabin. Family killed by Indians 1857. Erected by Ladies of the Lake Chapter DAR, 1928.”
“The family of Joel Howe and his wife and six children were murdered by the marauders. The cabin was located on the east shore of East Okoboji Lake, about four miles distance from the Gardner site. The marker is placed on the roadside just North of the YMCA (Camp Foster) turn off, directly in front of a farm site.” (Taken from brochure of Ladies of the Lake Chapter, NSDAR, Spirit Lake.)
This plaque is located on Co Rd. M56 (260th Avenue) just north of Camp Foster. There is a farm gate where you can pull up to park.
