Pat Tillman played football at Arizona State University. Afterwards, he was hired by the Arizona Cardinals. During this time, 9/11 happened. It had a profound effect on Tillman, so that he quit his professional football career and joined the Army Rangers. Tillman turned down a contract offer of $3.6 million over three years from the Cardinals to enlist in the U.S. Army.

He enlisted in June 2002. Tillman was eventually deployed to Afghanistan. On April 22, 2004, he was killed by friendly fire. Initially the reports of his death were sketchy and false. Controversy surrounded reports of his death and the way his death was investigated and reported. A Congressional hearing was called on it. The details of all of this can be found online.

The Cardinals have named the plaza surrounding their University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale Pat Tillman Freedom Plaza. Later, during a Cardinals game, a bronze statue was revealed in his honor. The statue portrays him when he played football. The pose is taken from a photograph. Copyright prohibits me from posting it here. This is the statue in this waymark.

The memorial type is listed as "other." It consists of a plaza, fountain and a statue.
