First established in 1855 as the Rose and Crown Music Hall, the splendid building was rebuilt many times and became successfully The Crowders Music Hall, the Royal Borough Theatre of Varieties, the Parthenon Theatre of Varieties, the Greenwich Palace of Varieties, Barnard's Palace and the Greenwich Hippodrome Picture Palace.
Despite Greenwich Council bought the site for demolition in 1962, local actor and director Ewan Hooper managed to create a professional theatre in Greenwich with strong links in the local community.
An entirely new building emerged in 1969, with a restaurant, dressing rooms on the ground floor and a new stage.
Thanks to local people campaigning and a generous financial package from Greenwich Council and the Greenwich Development Agency, Greenwich Theatre was saved again in 1999 and still produces a body of work of astonishing quality and variety.
