A granite marker near the Spotsylvania County Courthouse in Virginia marks the location of Confederate Gen. R. E. Lee's headquarters during the battleClick for related waymark to open in new window that took place in May 1864. The inscription reads:

LEE'S
HEADQUARTERS
BATTLE OF
SPOTSYLVANIA
COURT HOUSE
MAY 10, 11, 12, 1864
1903 REPLACED 1964

The Federals led by Gen. U. S. Grant and the Confederates led by Lee met and clashed again after leaving Wildnerness. On May 10, Lee set up headquarters near the intersection of Brock Road where his center line was positioned and Fredericksburg Road (now Courthouse Rd.) where his right flank was. Grant was determined to bring the war to an end, but the Confederates fought back tenaciously. At one point, Gen. Lee rode forward to lead his men in a counterattack, but Gen. John Gordon made him return to headquarters at the rear.

After vicious fighting at the Bloody Angle, Lee pulled back his line on May 13. The battle would continue down Fredericksburg Rd. and the final Spotsylvania skirmish was on May 19.
