The Land Run of 1889 opened this area of Indian Territory to non-Indian settlement. Almost immediately a Sunday School began, which met in a "soddie" near this location. By 1898 the congregation set aside funds for a church building. An acre of land was donated by a member and this beautiful wood church was built, mostly hand-built by the congregation. The church was dedicated on July 3, 1899 and has held services continuously ever since.
The beauty of this building is its simplicity. It is a perfect example of Carpenter Gothic, with its prominent central entry tower, and its pointed arch window lintels. The building is set on native stone, quarried locally, and has a gabled roof. Siding is typical lap siding, with fish-scale shingles on the bell section of the tower. The entrance faces west with double, 4-panel wood doors.
A classroom wing was added at the southeast corner of the building in 1945-1946. This, too, is a modest, traditional wood-sided building which was dedicated to two church members who died in World War II. This wing was enlarged in 1982, adding a kitchen, classrooms and rest rooms.
The interior of the sanctuary is also plain and simple, with wood floors, straight wooden pews and a hand-carved pulpit. The original coal-burning pot-belly stove and coal lamps have been replaced with central heating and A/C. West Point Christian Church is a beautiful example of simplicity and continuity. The building has been nicely maintained and stands much as it did 112 years ago. It has earned its place on the National Register (#83002079).
