Marker Text:
Charging through a fringe of trees, U.S. Troops on Aug. 9, 1878, ended a four hour skirmish with a hundred Bannock Indians on an island in Bennett Creek nearby. The war had begun in June on Camas Prairie and had swung clear to central Oregon. Now the Indians were returning to their reservation at Fort Hall. Harried from the island, they soon lost the pursuing troops in rough country north of here. This was the last battle of the war.
