Silver, who owned the house from 1984 to 2002, completed a painstaking restoration with the help of Wright’s grandson, Eric Lloyd Wright.

According to Robert Sweeney, the Storer house is a hybrid of another concrete-block project for the Lowes in Eagle Rock. When the house was re-drawn for Storer, several adjustments were made—most significantly it was rotated 180 degree making the back the front. The Storer house occupies a steep hillside plot and when it was constructed in the 1920s looked more like a Pompeiian villa rising out of the naked Hollywood hills when they lacked the softening effect of foliage present today .

Four different block patterns are used in the Storer house and this house is the only one built that employs more than one design. However, composing with multiple patterns did not produce consistent results, particularly in the interior where the patterns occasionally collide .

Lloyd Wright supervised construction and as the landscape architect provided an illusion of a ruin just barely visible within its jungle environment. The finished house, with much merit, was a compromise, the result of a client with insufficient capital, an absentee architect, and an inexperienced construction supervisor.

Storer has left no record of what he thought of his house as a work of architecture. While he did move in, the house was placed on the market shortly after completion and was sold by 1927. Pauline Schindler, by then separated from her architect husband RM Schindler, while renting the house in 1931 commented, “The room in which I sit writing is a form so superb that I am constantly conscious of an immense obligation to Mr. Wright.”

This is a private residence. Please be respectful of the current owners.
