According to research by the University of Southern California School of Architecture, the block pattern used for the Freeman house is FLlW’s most complex and consists of over fifty variations including mirror images of the basis design and others for various mitres. One interpretation is that the tulip-like design represents the basic square floorplan enveloped by the surrounding eucalyptus trees .

Lloyd Wright supervised the construction, serving as both project architect and contractor. After the Freemans occupied the house, RM Schindler became their architect for over two decades and made various modifications to suit the Freemans’ use of the residence for cultural gatherings and long-term visits by their artistic friends . Free-standing and built-in furniture by Schindler reinforces a linear, domestic quality, particularly in the commitment to the horizontal.

The Freemans celebrated their house as one of the centers of avant-garde artistic and political activity in Los Angeles from the 1920s into the 1980s. Harriet Freeman arranged the gift of the house to the USC School of Architecture to protect and preserve this architectural gem. After 61 proud years of residence by the couple who built it, the Freeman House came into the possession of the School of Architecture in 1986.

Like the other textile block houses, the Freeman house has long suffered from the deterioration of the textile blocks exacerbated by damage by the 1994 San Fernando earthquake. The Freeman house is currently undergoing major structural stabilization and restoration. Most of the Schindler modifications and interior finishes have been removed during repairs.

The house is closed to the general public until further notice.
