The origins of the use of The Bull for a pub sign are manifold.
Clearly there could be a farming link. Pubs of this name in the centre of market towns may be nodding in this direction. However, it has been suggested that the earliest use may be a reference to the Papal Bull, an edict, letter or charter carrying the 'bulla', or seal of the pope.
When Henry VIII defied the pope, he incorporated a bull into his coat of arms (and it already appeared in the arms of Anne Boleyn).
And then there is bull baiting to consider as well. It may be a reference to a local past-time.
