The sculpture is based on Norman Rockwell's painting "Boy on Stilts" which was featured on the front cover of "The Saturday Evening Post" on October 4, 1919. The boy is dressed in trousers held up with suspenders. He is bare footed as he walks on the stilts. As he walks on his stilts the dog appears to jump up on him causing him to fear he will fall as can be seen in the expression on his face. In the original painting the dog is no jumping on him but rather has his lease wrapped around the stilts causing the same reaction.
